Mission Statement:
To reinsert homeless people into society by offering valuable outlets, education and skills that will allow them to be self-sufficient and contributing members of society.
We’ve all felt the feelings that I felt that day. We’ve all driven past the cardboard shacks in the pouring rain and wondered, “Could I ever do that?” We’ve all seen the tattered and torn clothes these victims wear on their cold bodies and disheartening expressions they wear on their countenances. Most times we look away and the feelings and thoughts flee. One day, these feelings didn’t go. I travel on 4th west almost everyday. I work close by and, to get to school and other obligations, I frequently pass that street filled with much of the diversity our small world offers. We began talking in my English class that night about a Big Idea. We had to come up with a big idea that could help change the world. My mind was already wandering and reflecting on those people I had seen earlier and the word “Big Idea” seemed to be the only things that broke the silent daze I was in. I knew my Big Idea would be about them. I had to help them.
But what could I do? I'm a college student with little time and even less experience. I wanted to make a real difference, not just casually toss a dollar or two at one of these people thinking "I've done my good act for the day". I know many feel the same way and would love to help but time and money restraints don't allow of the involvement we would like. I began researching homelessness. What makes people homeless? Do they stay that way for long? Through this study I found many interesting facts. Utah streets are the home to almost 15,000 homeless people each year. There are many reasons why these poor people live in this horrible status. Abuse (both of substances and of persons), becoming disabled in some way and bad relationships are a few. One that is ultimately overarching is poverty. No one can become homeless unless they lack the means to rent or buy a house. But how could I fix this titanic problem of poverty? Then I thought, "well, aren't I going to school so that I can make enough money to eventually provide for a family?" Then the key came: education. These people need to learn and gain the skills to get jobs and become self-sustaining individuals. But that offered a host of problems. Then the idea came. We could establish an organization that provides free educational, art and skills classes to the homeless. Students, as part of their individual curricula, could teach these classes and pass on their knowledge! Students in different majors and at different levels (even graduate levels) could teach a huge assortment of classes. Classes could be held at close by shelters and materials provided through donation. The idea started to flow and began to pervade my every thought. Could this work? Well that depends on you...
